Learn the Facts about Cataracts

What is a Cataract?

In the middle of the eye is a lens which helps focus light onto the retina in the back of the eye. Early in life, this lens is made of a clear, soft protein (like egg white). As we age, the proteins in the lens harden and eventually become cloudy. A cloudy lens causes cloudy vision and is called a cataract. Cataract surgery replaces this old, cloudy lens with a new, clear lens, restoring normal vision. Surgery normally takes about 5 minutes.

How the Eye Works

Both the cornea and the lens help focus the image onto the retina. If either the cornea or lens do not properly focus the image onto the retina, vision is blurred. Improper curvature of the cornea creates nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. We can correct these conditions with LASIK. However, we can also correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism by replacing the lens during cataract surgery.

Cataract Surgery

1. Relatively simple procedure that usually takes about 5 minutes.
2. No sutures.
3. No injections
4. Little or no discomfort.
5. Patients are given IV sedation so they are not nervous.
6. During this short surgery, patients see many lights and colors.
7. Patients do not see sharp instruments coming towards their eye.

Lens Implants

A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. When this cloudy lens is removed during cataract surgery, it must be replaced with a synthetic lens. For many years we used monofocal lenses which enabled most people to see well in the distance, but required glasses for up-close. New “premium” lens implants can enable people to see both in the distance and up-close without glasses. There are addition fees associated with premium lenses.

Common Questions

The most common question asked is, “Do cataracts grow back”? The answer is no! How do you know when cataracts are ready to be removed? Cataracts do not harm the eye. They simply cause blurred vision. Cataracts need to be removed when the patient feels that their blurred vision is affecting their lifestyle. Cataracts not bothering the patient do NOT need to be removed.
