The INTACS procedure (Intrastromal Corneal Ring) is used to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses in patients who are mildly to moderately nearsighted.

In this procedure specially designed polymethylmethacrylate (plastic) rings are implanted in the peripheral (outer) cornea. These rings cause steepening of the peripheral cornea and flattening of the central cornea. This corrects nearsightedness. One of the advantages of the INTACS procedure over other refractive procedures is that the central cornea is not directly involved in the surgery. This helps minimize risk. In addition, the INTACS rings are fairly easy to exchange or remove if the patient is not satisfied with their results.
