- When you arrive at AAPECS Eye Care your vision and eyeglass prescription
will be checked one more time. Anesthetic eye drops will be placed
in your eyes and you will be offered Valium if you are nervous.
- You
will be brought into the surgical suite, your eye will be prepped
(cleaned with a Betadine solution) and a small wire speculum is used
to hold your eye open.
- You will be asked to look at a small white
dot on the underside of the operating microscope as special instruments
are used to mark
your
cornea in the areas where the incisions are to be made.
- The diamond
blade used to make the incisions for Radial Keratotomy can be set
to create cuts of very specific depths and often must
be reset before each incision.
- A special instrument is used to
stabilize the your eye as the small incisions are made.
- A separate
diamond knife is used for AK incisions.
- Making all necessary incisions
usually takes less than 5 minutes.
- Once all incisions are made they
are irrigated with a saline solution to remove any debris.
