The RK procedure (Radial Keratotomy) is used to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses in patients who are mildly to moderately nearsightedness. AK procedure (Astgmatic Keratotomy) is used to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses in patients who have astigmatism.

Patients with nearsightedness AND astigmatism can have both RK and AK. RK is an incisional surgical procedure using a diamond blade instead of a laser. In performing RK, Dr. Frenkel makes 2-6 incisions in the cornea. He orients these incisions to correct nearsightedness, astigmatism or nearsightedness associated with astigmatism.
