What was laser vision correction before customized laser treatments?
Standard laser vision correction remains an excellent option for reducing or eliminating the need for glasses. In most people, the old “standard” laser reshaping of the cornea could reduce nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism. In the old “standard” laser vision correction we determined how many layers of cornea needed to be removed. The laser then removed one layer at a time until we reached the layer where the nearsightedness was no longer present. We used a similar process to correct farsightedness and astigmatism.
What "standard" vision correction couldn't do.
Again, standard laser vision correction allowed us to program the laser to remove one layer of cornea at time until we reached the layer where the nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism was no longer present. But what if the final surface layer left after the laser had finished its’ work did not match the “ideal” template shape that the laser was trying to create? What happened was that the nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism may have been reduced or eliminated, but the vision was still not as good as it could have been because the surface of the cornea was not smooth. Using the old “standard” laser vision correction technology there was no way to prevent this situation.In other words, in standard laser vision correction, if the shape of your cornea was slightly different (irregular) than the "perfect template shape", the laser would re-create this same irregularity in your re-shaped cornea!
How is Customized Laser Vision Correction Different?
Customized laser vision correction does not use “templates” to reshape your cornea. Prior to your laser treatment we create a detailed, computerized image of the true shape of your cornea. We then upload this computerized image into our laser. The laser will then recognize slight irregularities in the shape of YOUR cornea and make the appropriate adjustments. In other words, the laser can “customize” your laser vision surgery to reduce or eliminate the way that your cornea may differ from the “perfect shape”.
In Customized Laser Vision Correction, if the shape of your cornea is slightly irregular, the laser will attempt to correct the final shape to approach that of the “perfect shape”.
Another way to put it...
Think of the surface of your cornea as if it was your front lawn. You determine the height of your grass by setting the appropriate height in your lawnmower. However, the ground beneath the grass acts as a “template” for the ultimate contour of your lawn. If there is a mound or crater in your yard, this irregularity will still be seen no matter how tall or short you cut your grass.
