Testimonials from FM99

FM99's Tommy Griffiths on his LASIK surgery
"I had horrendous eyesight before. I couldn't see my hand in front of my face. I'd been wearing glasses for 24 years, since I was 14 years old. It was very uncomfortable. I wore contacts, and they were uncomfortable, too. It was difficult to fall asleep with contacts; you couldn't doze off. Even waking up, it was difficult to see the clock or anything else. If there was an emergency, you had to jump out of bed and run into things."

Now I don't have to worry about these things. I had the LASIK surgery done on a Friday afternoon at 3. I went home and went to bed. The next morning, I was up and in my boat fishing at 8AM. No discomfort and perfect vision. In fact, with the surgery my vision is better than perfect. I'm 20/15. What a great moment that first morning after the surgery, being able to see the clock clearly and thinking, 'It really works. It's miraculous!'

I'm an avid fisherman, both deep-sea and freshwater. It's crucial to be able to see when you're on the water, looking for clues where the fish are. It's also great for navigation to see where you're going. I think I'm safer on the water, especially when it's raining or with the ocean spray. Before, you had to wipe your glasses.

I haven't met anyone who wasn't thrilled. I've even thrown out the hypothetical question, 'How much would you pay?' Now that I've had it, I can say I'd pay 10 times the amount. I was kicking myself when it was done. I'd said, 'When anyone is touching your eyes, you're a little uncomfortable.' Afterward, I asked myself, 'Why was I ever nervous?' It was quick and painless. The worst part was imagining what would happen. I tell people, 'Trust me. Don't even worry about it.'

"The only discomfort? When they whack you with the tire iron before they do the surgery. You'd think they could come up with a better way to ease the pain."

Cheryl Griffiths on her LASIK surgery
"I first started wearing glasses in the 3rd grade when I was 8 years old. I started wearing contacts when I was 18 or 19, so I'd worn contacts for over 20 years. I was very comfortable wearing contacts, but Tommy and I lead very active lives; deep sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling. I have a hard time getting a mask to fit, and so naturally, I have to clear my mask a lot. Getting saltwater in your eyes with contacts in is a real pain. I felt like, if I could just see without them, I'd be so happy.

I just had the LASIK surgery done. Now I'm so excited! It's great; it's wonderful! My vision is 20/25. Now it's so convenient. You don't have to schlep contact paraphernalia around with you. I've noticed I can see street signs clearly and sooner than I could before, even with my contacts.

I like to watch the news in bed. Before, I'd take my glasses off and listen to it. If something good came on, I'd have to scramble for my glasses and would often miss it by the time I got them on. Now I can just raise my head and see it.

"The staff is wonderful. They treat you like they've known you forever. Eric comes out of the back and talks to people in the waiting room. I see everybody treated like family."

"I've worn glasses or contact lenses on and off since I was a youngster. I was supposed to wear them when I was 8, but I never wore them. When I got to college, I wore contact lenses. Then a few years ago, I got sick of putting them in and losing them. For about a year and a half, I went without contact lenses at all.

I never would have thought that, with lasers, you could correct my vision in 10 seconds. I was a perfect candidate for the LASIK procedure. Exactly 2 hours after the procedure, I could tell the difference. Now my vision's close to 20/20. I truly can see like a hawk.

My wife is so jealous. She can ask me the time, and all I have to do is just roll over and I can see the clock. This is unbelievable.

The biggest part is, every time I had appointment with Dr. Frenkel and his staff, they were always on time. There was no waiting. That took the edge off of the worry. As you're going through the procedure, you have Dr. Frenkel talking to you in his calm voice, with his calm demeanor. It's so amazing watching their whole operation at work. These guys know what they're doing.

It doesn't hurt. At lot of people are afraid of it; they're afraid of someone screwing around with their eyes. There's no pain at all; it's like getting a haircut. I stop to think how people take their eyesight for granted. Now I tell anybody, "Don't consider it; just do it!"
